This included an assignment which required students to write about how children are portrayed in imagery, such as the media, and analyze the effect this has on peoples attitudes and perceptions. I received a Distinction for this particularly Early Childhood assignment, and the following comment was made :
"You have presented an insightful analysis, supported well with appropriate research". (Lecturer feedback, 2009, Early Childhood assignment).
In my first year I received a Distinction for an essay I wrote on how different cultures benefit learners in Australian Universities, The following comment was also made:
The fact that I am skilled in the art of cross cultural communication, is another reason why I regard myself as being culturally competent. Effective communication related to cross cultural competence is enhanced because:
>I respect individuals from other cultures
>I make continued and sincere attempts to empathetically understand the world from others point of view
>I am open to new learning
>I am flexible
>I have a healthy sense of humour
>I tolerate ambiguity well
>I am sensitive to my own prejudices
>I approach others with a desire and openness to learn
>I have a genuine interest in others
>I see differences not in terms of inferiority but as learning opportunities(Roux, 2002,p42 refers to lynch1999 p77)
I apply the above skills in the classroom when designing and adapting lessons, when communicating with students and parents, and when reflecting on my own practice. I also:
-profile, observe and seek further information about the individual students in the classroom
-ensure there is equal and positive representation of diverse groups and people, including the resources and displays used
-ensure students recieve equal access to learning and resources
-promote a sense of belonging- include children, for example in the program
-assist students to identify and solve conflicts in positive ways
-and promote an understanding and respect for others
(Global Education Project, 2002)
"This is an interesting essay which is generally indicative of a firm understanding of key issues and genuine interest in inclusive practice."
(Lecturer feedback, 2010, Managing Diversity Assessment 1)
"You are such a kind, thoughtful and caring person and these wonderful traits will make you a fantastic teacher" (Paula Siddans, Supervising teacher, 2011, comment on Thank-you card)
